Long bio
Meredith is a writer, musician and producer in the Seattle area. Following in her grandparents’ musical footsteps, Meredith sat in the den at the organ and piano from the time she was five years old. Sound could not escape her fast enough. After a half dozen years of piano and band, she joined a local punk trio as a drummer and never quite looked back. She spent the bulk of her formative years playing drums in local and regional punk, riot grrl, and indie rock bands before fronting her own and flexing her budding songwriting skills. She produced several EPs which are lost to time and tape, and shared bills with The Bangs, Mars Volta, The Shins, and others.
Coming from the high school and college media and journalism trenches, Meredith landed at KEXP as a digital producer. She left the station to pursue her own creative activities – which, at the time, included founding a small beauty brand. She grew the brand to an annual six figures before the birth of her daughter, at which time, she sold the company to new owners. The brand, like many bandmates before and after, moved to Portland. But under her helm, Sweet Anthem was featured in Anthropologie, stores from Seattle to Milan, and earned press from Seattle Metropolitan, The Stranger, Seattle Brides, Ca Fleure Bon, The Seattle Times, Now Smell This, Indie Perfumes, and more.
Years later, in spite of a change in media and delivery mechanism, her work continues to explore much of the same as it always did. Dichotomies, multiple voices, defamiliarized writing, everyday horrors. A blend of reality and something else. Distillations of the idea that, in love, everyone is complicit. The vibes are that of the best indie movie soundtrack you can never find in your local record store, but you still hear it in your head and in your heart. Similar artists include Tennis, Japanese Breakfast, and The Sundays.
In addition to music, Meredith writes poetry, short and long fiction, and editorial features. She is proud to have her work included in The Cryptonaturalist, The Gravity of the Thing, and elsewhere. She has produced literary and music events at The Rabbit Box Theatre, Common Area Maintenance, and Easy Street Records, to name a few. She recently was laid off from her corporate day job, and is, frankly, looking to see how far all of this might get her.
In the real world, she is mom to Charlotte, a Kirby-playing, guitar-shredding almost post-5th grader. You can currently find Meredith playing at open mics and area events this summer with her band, a five-piece called Meredith Smith. She also plays bass or performs FOH and hosting duties for friends and events when the needs arise.
